Upper N.W. Washington D.C. Private Residence full sewer renewal

The reason we were called in

Sewer backup

During a major renovation of this turn of the century historic mansion the sewer began to back up and put the whole renovation in jeopardy.

The resident plumber on site immediately responded when the sewer backed up with a camera and a traditional snake. He had a difficult time but was able to get the flow restored. At this point NoVa Lining was called in to get a full assessment done on the line by a certified pipe inspector and to determine if any further action was needed.

Initial Investigation

Upon NoVa Lining's initial investigation, it was determined that the cast iron sewer pipe in question had deteriorated past the point of serviceable use. Based on the age the pipe had far out lived its life expectancy. It was then determined that there was a lack of suitable access points for addressing the sewer lines issues. The owner inquired about ways to avoid traditional excavation as the landscape held both sentimental and historic value to the owner, he didn't want to see his labor of love destroyed after all these years.

The solution we provided

Precision Locating

First and foremost Nova Lining proceeded to perform a precision locate of the pipe in question. This was performed in conjunction with the initial CCTV inspection and assessment so that the project could hit the ground running.

Install Trenchless cleanout

From this point Nova Lining proceeded to have an emergency miss utility ticket called in the same day and they immediately mobilized the next day to perform two trenchless Vac A Tee cleanout installation at very specific locations that would not disturb the historic landscape. At each pre-determined location a small precision 30" by 20" air excavated hole was dug down to the sewer pipe.

Vac A Tee Saddle

A custom cast iron Vac A Tee saddle was then adhered to the pipe with riser pipe in place. It was carefully backfilled with the soil that was removed. This same process was repeated a second time to create a second access point.

Core drill for Access

Once the adhesive underground had passed the water test and the adhesive was dry. Nova Lining returned the following morning to core drill through the top of the sewer pipe thus creating a two way access point.

Cleaning and debris removal

NoVa then proceeded to deploy their high-speed miller with precision carbide cutting chains along with their high-pressure water hydro Jetter to clean and descale the affected sewer line. This process was able to cut all 100 years of cast iron buildup off of the pipes and complete remove it from the pipe altogether. This process brought the pipe back as close to its original diameter and the pipe was left in the best condition it had been in since it was first put in the ground over 100 years ago.

Installing Cured In Place Pipe Liner

Nova Lining then proceeded to schedule with the owner their installation date for the cured in place pipe installation. Since the pipe had been cleaned to "Lining Standard" it was no longer in danger of backing up in between the time it was cleaned and the cured in place pipe liner was installed. The owner chose to be out of the house for the day while the cured in place pipe liners were installed. This took around 6 and a half hours of no water use and the project was complete.

Completion package

The homeowner now had a new 50 year life expectancy on his aging sewer pipes with no traditional excavation needed and he was able to maintain the character of his historic property. As part of our completion package the owner received their copy of NoVa Linings Quality control installation log, pre and post videos and warranties and all final documents and the job was completed.

"The Nova Lining team was exceptional. They were very professional and went above and beyond to help diagnose a complex situation with my older property's system. Nova Lining also provides a tremendous value in that they are typically lower cost and with their detail-oriented process, provide property owners incredible insight into their properties system. I would recommend them be the first call for any sewer needs for both residential and commercial needs- RON, S-Washington,D.C.
